Film Review – ‘Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon’

Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon (Brodie, Medina)

What do you get when you cross a metal-heavy horror-comedy with musicians battling undead townsfolk? If you said “a metal show, duh!”, you’re only half-right, and that’s okay!

Enter the sequel to 2015’s cult classic ‘Deathgasm’ written and directed by Jason Leo Howden featuring Milo Cawthorne reviving his role as our ne’er do well Brodie. Brodie is worse than when we last saw (and when we last saw him, he had survived demons running amok and threatening all of humanity…or at least just their town, either or), his girlfriend Medina (Kimberly Crossman) having left him to go on and continue a music career. Brodie has a hard time letting go, his friend Giles (Daniel Cresswell) saying as much and trying to get Brodie to move on with his life, which has been not as great as he had hoped. Brodie, in a drunken stupor, sees that there’s a battle of the bands competition coming to town called NoizeQuest, and he’s determined to go. Even if that means doing something incredibly ridiculous like repeating a mistake that caused the demon apocalypse that nearly wiped them out. Yes, Brodie decides he needs his old band mates back, even if it means things will get dicey. Problem with that is they’re dead.

Brodie, against better judgement and Giles’s strong advice since their last encounter left Giles short one arm, finds an incantation in The Black Hymn that brings back his bandmates from the great beyond. They’re back, but not without issues: they need to feed on living flesh to be able to do pretty much anything. Zakk and Dion have to be sated to play, until undead Zakk has a change of heart. He no longer wishes to eat meat. He now would like to be vegan. Imagine that…an undead vegan. With undead Zakk no longer wishing to participate in carnage, Dion doesn’t feel the same. Instead, he wants to take it up a notch and take over the town by bringing back more dead folks, and having them turn the town into a bloodbath with him as their leader. With one of his dead bandmates going rogue, Brodie and the rest of the band have to battle (and shred), once again, for their lives!

‘Deathgasm 2’ delivers to us what we truly relished in with the first installment, and that’s perfectly timed laughs, extreme amounts of gore and blood, and massive metal moments. The return of the original cast made my heart happy, even if two of them came back as zombies (which is even better for me because I’m a big fan of Romero zombies), but we also got a guest appearance from Trivium’s Matthew Heafy!! The metal gods smiled upon us once more!

Packed with amazing heavy metal music, comedy, and campy gore, ‘Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon’ is worth the watch. Catch it in select theaters across the U.S. and Canada September 29th and available on VOD October 13th (just in time for Halloween).
