Welcome back!!!

Book reviews have been halted for quite some time, but it’s exhilarating to be back on the wagon (so to speak), and I’m pleased to have an old familiar as the “welcome back” piece!

Today’s review is from Sci-Fi/Fantasy writer Eugen Bacon (Novic, Claiming T-Mo). Her latest work, Crimson in Quietus is a brilliant science-fiction meets “who-dun-it?” with an incredible world enmeshed within.

In Crimson in Quietus, we encounter Muso’mi, a person incredibly gifted at consuming sound known as a maadiregi. She’s a student at Mahadum of the Mother’s Whisper and there, she researches the language of silence along with her friend Fin’lei. Fin’lei has this amazing ability to use sound to create mini copies of almost anything! But when Fin’lei comes across something dangerous in her research, she comes up missing. Muso’mi now has to find her friend, her search taking across different worlds, including the “pools of quietude”.

This story is steeped in magic, sound being a strong force within the worlds created by Bacon. It’s used in a myriad of ways throughout the story, and even becomes dangerous for our protagonist when encountering a foe who has no qualms about taking by force.

Crimson in Quietus is a fantastical piece of storytelling, with elements of horror and Afro-futurism that Bacon is no stranger to lending her pen to. It’s a captivating story that is a lot to take in at times, but rich in world building that makes up for it. It turns into a murder mystery that leaves your curiosity piqued and really sucks you in.

If you enjoy science fiction with edge and a massive world experience and beautiful language, Crimson in Quietus is perfect for you.
